We have a stretch goal to port the game to Android and iOS. I assume you mean the game, and not my girlfriend? Because she’d love a holiday, but I think that would be a misuse of Kickstarter money. I think it’s great that people are able to cut-out conservative publishers and make games directly for fans.Ĩ) Any long-term plans to take Nelly mobile? If we meet our funding then my answer is yes! Actually, I think it’s a really positive thing, and my girlfriend and I have backed a lot of games, from indie projects like the DoubleFine Adventure and Broken Sword 5 to super-indie projects run by one or two people. But I’ve spent many happy hours playing this kind of game, and it’s great to hear people’s feedback when they’ve enjoyed the game.ħ) What’s it like being an indie game developer? Is Kickstarter a good place for getting indie gaming projects off the ground?
In the future I’d certainly like to work on something less traditional perhaps a bit darker. But just a different, much less fun kind of fun. It actually turned out to be a lot of hard work, but it is still fun to take an amusing, quirky idea and make it a reality. As different as they are, comedy, film and indie games all involve storytelling, humour and imagination, and that’s what draws me to them.Ħ) Why did you choose this retro adventure style of game to develop? My graduation film was recently shortlisted for a Student Oscar and I came second in the Laughing Horse New Act Competition for stand-up comedy. I also write and perform stand up comedy at London’s many open-mic nights.
I graduated last year, and now I’m working freelance as a filmmaker and animator. I’m from the North East of England and I came to London to study at the London Film School. Many of our backers will appear as cartoon pirates in a section of the game called the Rogue’s Gallery, and so we’ll be getting in contact with them to find out how they want to appear.
We’ll start scheduling production, to help us deliver the game as well as all the rewards we’ve promised. The goal of £15,000 is a pretty modest sum compared to other indie games, and that reflects the fact that it’s a basically a labour of love, but it just needs a little push from the Kickstarter community to make it happen.Ĥ) What happens next if you are successfully funded? But I realised that I wouldn’t be able to give it the focus it needed, or the level of production value in terms of voice acting and animation, without having a little bit of money behind it. I’ve been working on this game for several years, and I’ve put a huge amount of time into it. I made the first game as a birthday present for her, so that’s why Nelly Cootalot is a pirate adventurer who rescues endangered birds.ģ) Why did you decide to use Kickstarter as a crowd-funding platform? Nelly Cootalot is based on my girlfriend, who loves pirates, birds and adventure games. It’s the follow-up to a freeware game I made a few years ago called Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! I’ve always loved adventure games, and making a game is a great excuse to come up with interesting characters and locations, and write funny dialogue. My project is a retro adventure game called Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet. The project has so far achieved 89% of its Kickstarter goal and now includes a playable demo which gives a sneak peek into the game’s world, turned upside down by the villainous Baron Widebeard!
